Fix a Squeaky Floor

Chapter 1 — What’s Actually Making the Squeak

Walk the floor. Identify exact squeak locations. Mark with tape.

Above a joist (usually in a line parallel to other joists): subfloor has separated from the joist. Most common.

Random locations, not over joists: subfloor sheet seams rubbing, OR top flooring moving against subfloor.

Stairs: similar pattern — riser-to-tread or tread-to-stringer friction.

A hand marking floor squeak locations with blue tape to plan the repair.
