Chapter 1 — What You’re Installing

Options: - OTR microwave: built-in microwave mounted above the range, with integrated light and fan. Saves countertop space. Fan is weaker than a dedicated hood but adequate for most. - Range hood: dedicated ventilation appliance above the range. Better airflow, no microwave function.

This book covers both — the install is nearly identical.

Vented vs recirculating

• Vented (ducted): connects to a duct that exhausts air outside. Removes cooking odors, steam, grease completely. Best.
• Recirculating: filters grease and odor through charcoal filter, returns air to kitchen. Cheaper install, weaker performance. Necessary if no duct path exists.

Most new OTR micros and hoods can be installed either way — choose based on existing duct availability.
