Probe with a screwdriver: - Solid, no sinking: sound wood. - Soft, screwdriver sinks 1/2”+: rotted.
Check: - Behind the gutter (where water ran back). - At corners / ends. - At any joint with the wall (where flashing was bad).
Rot rarely stays local — check a foot past visible damage in both directions.
