What Goes Wrong (And How to Avoid It)

  • Not checking subfloor flatness before installation — leads to squeaks and hollow spots
  • Skipping acclimation for hardwood — boards cup or gap after installation
  • Choosing LVP with too-thin wear layer for high-traffic areas
  • Starting the layout from the wrong wall — visible cuts in the worst spots
  • Not accounting for expansion gaps at walls — floors buckle in summer

Flooring Projects Questions

Is LVP or hardwood better for a basement?

LVP (luxury vinyl plank) for basements, always. Hardwood and engineered hardwood are both problematic below grade due to moisture. LVP is waterproof and floats over concrete without issue.

How flat does my subfloor need to be?

The industry standard is 3/16" over 10 feet. High-gloss tile is the most demanding — any variation shows. LVP is the most forgiving. I'll tell you how to check and correct yours.

How long does flooring take to install?

A 500 sq ft room is a full weekend including prep. Tile takes longer than floating floors — budget 3–4 days for a large tiled area once you factor in layout, setting, grouting, and curing time.
