Install a Dimmer Switch

Match the Load, Match the Bulb

Upgrade a light switch to a dimmer in 15 minutes. The trick is matching the dimmer to the bulb type (LED, incandescent) and the wiring configuration (single-pole, 3-way).

About This Guide

LED dimmers are not incandescent dimmers.

Installing a dimmer is the same physical job as replacing a switch — three wires, two screws, cover plate. What makes it different: dimmers have to be matched to the load they're driving. The wrong combination flickers, buzzes, or burns out the dimmer.

This book walks: - Dimmer types and which bulbs each controls. - Single-pole vs 3-way dimmers. - Installation. - The neutral-wire requirement (smart dimmers, some LED dimmers). - Testing and troubleshooting flicker.
