Install a Smart Thermostat

Wiring It Right the First Time

A smart thermostat install is thirty minutes IF you have a C-wire. This book walks the wiring, the C-wire adapter options if you don't, and the HVAC compatibility checks that save you from fried equipment.

Kindle edition coming soon. Until then, the PDF download includes the same content.

About This Guide

C-wire or no C-wire — that's the question.

Every smart thermostat (Nest, Ecobee, Honeywell, Amazon) needs constant power to maintain Wi-Fi and display. Traditional thermostats pulled power from a battery or through the heat-call wire; smart thermostats need a dedicated common (C) wire. Most homes pre-2010 don't have one.

This book walks: - Thermostat terminology and the wires at a residential HVAC thermostat. - Identifying whether you have a C-wire (and if not, what to do). - Power extender adapters vs. running a new C-wire from the furnace. - Brand differences (Nest, Ecobee, Honeywell) and feature tradeoffs. - Install process: mark wires, remove old, mount new, connect, configure. - Setup via app and sensor placement for multi-zone homes. - Compatibility warnings: high-voltage line thermostats, certain heat-pump configurations.
