Before the big gut downstairs, I cleaned up the upstairs as a livable starting point. Pulled the old runner off the oak stairs, sanded and refinished the treads and the second-floor hardwood, then ran fresh gray carpet through the bedrooms and hallway. Trim got patched and painted, walls primed and rolled, and ceiling fans swapped. Kept the original cast-iron radiators and the stained-glass landing window — those are the bones of the house.
